Wellcome Sanger Institute Prize Competition 2022
The Wellcome Sanger Institute Prize Competition 2022 is now accepting applications.

The Sanger Prize is an outreach competition for undergraduate students from low- and middle-income countries who live and study in those nations.
After John Sulston, Sydney Brenner, and Robert Horvitz were awarded the Nobel Prize for their work on C.elegans, the prize was established in 2002.
John Sulston wanted to give his share of the prize money to a charitable trust that would be administered by the Sanger Institute, so he appointed a Board of Trustees who decided that the money should be used to fund an annual essay competition for students who would not otherwise have access to the institute’s facilities.
The competition winner will be asked to work in a lab of their choosing for three months at the Institute, hosted by a member of the Sanger Faculty.
The fund covers all of their necessary travel, housing, and training costs, and the Institute provides support and mentoring via both the scientific program they work with and the staff that administers the fund.
Prize
The Sanger Institute Prize recipient will be granted a three-month internship with a Wellcome Sanger Institute research group.
The prize covers all of your expenditures, including travel, housing, and research.

Application for Wellcome Sanger Institute Prize Competition
The 2022 competition will be run as a two-stage process.
The first stage is the expression of interest.
Applicants in the first step must fill out a brief application form and submit an expression of interest outlining their scientific interests, genomics interests, and why they wish to work at the Sanger Institute.
The maximum word count for an expression of interest is 500 words; candidates should attempt to write close to this amount in order to adequately illustrate their interest and eligibility for the award; submissions with a word count of less than 250 will be ignored. At this point, two academic references are also necessary.
The second stage is the essay.
Successful applicants will be invited to participate in the second stage of the process, which will require them to prepare an essay with a specific title. Candidates will be provided details of this step in early March 2022, and they will have one month to write the essay.
