The fellowship is worth $50,000 per year for three years of doctorate study and is awarded based on three equally weighted selection criteria: academic excellence, research potential, and leadership.

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program was established by the Canadian government in 2008 to increase Canada’s capacity to recruit and maintain world-class doctoral students, as well as to develop Canada as a worldwide center of excellence in research and higher education.

In graduate studies in the social sciences and humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering, and health, Vanier Scholars display leadership capabilities and high quality of academic success.

Application for Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

How to Apply: Applicants for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships 2022/23 should be aware that most scholarships are awarded via a nomination procedure.

Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution that has a quota for hosting Vanier scholars (i.e., a certain number of applications that may be submitted to the national competition).

Only the institution where the candidate wants to study should nominate them.

Application Timelines:

July – November 2021: Applicants seek a nominating institution, prepare and submit the application package.

Internal Deadline (varies): Deadline to submit the application to the nominating institution. Contact the nominating institution for a specific date.

November 2, 2021 (20:00 EST): Deadline for institutions to submit nominations to the Vanier CGS program.

November 2021 – March 2022: Review and evaluation of nominations.

Early April 2022: Anticipated notification of results. Nominees will be notified by email when the results are available on ResearchNet.

May 1, 2022, September 1, 2022, or January 1, 2023: Payments begin.
