Introduction

The University of Ilorin Council, therefore, notifies the general academic community that the position of Vice-Chancellor of the University will be vacant as of October 16, 2022.

The Council has decided to begin the process of choosing a new Vice-Chancellor in earnest, in line with the terms of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act No. 11 of 1993, as modified by Act No. 25 of 1996 and The Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act 2012. As a result, properly qualified individuals are encouraged to apply for the post.

A Synopsis of the University’s History

The University of Ilorin, founded by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1975, is one of Nigeria’s fastest-growing public institutions, with an excellent track record of academic success. In the last five (5) years, the University has been the most sought-after among candidates.

The University’s Vision is to be a global leader in learning, research, integrity, and humanitarian service, while its Mission is to create a world-class environment for learning, research, and community service. The University guards its fundamental principles, which were developed to promote inclusivity in its operations. Excellence, Integrity and Transparency, Empathy, Justice and Fair Play, Innovation and Creativity, and Teamwork are the basic principles.

With a student population of over 52,000 and a total staff strength of 3,745, the University has sixteen (16) Faculties, one (1) College of Health Sciences, six (6) Institutes, twenty (20) Centres, including a Centre for Open and Distance Learning, thirty-three (33) Directorates, and a Postgraduate School. The University takes pleasure in being one of Nigeria’s most stable universities, with academic activities taking place in a tranquil, peaceful, and pleasant atmosphere, and students finishing their programs on time. With a good mix of national and foreign students and staff, the school is really diversified.

Academic Excellence

In the fields of teaching and practical research, the University has carved out a place for itself. For example, the University has been rated first in research and development and other academic endeavors at different periods. The University was recently placed 7th in the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) overall ranking of Nigerian universities, 3rd in the Federal Universities category, and 1st in the North-Central Geopolitical Zone category. In February 2022, the Times Higher Education (THE) placed it second in Nigeria. It is one of just two universities in Nigeria to get an A+ in the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) sole Institutional Accreditation of Nigerian Universities for the 2011/2012 session, receiving a 7-year full institutional accreditation status.

The Position

In accordance with the Act establishing the University, the Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Academic Officer of the University and has broad control over it. Ex-Officio Chairman of Senate and Congregation, as well as a member of the University Governing Council, the Vice-Chancellor. The Vice-Chancellor is accountable to the Council for the day-to-day administration of the University’s human, financial, and material resources.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for the position of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Ilorin will have the following qualifications:

  • Be a prominent Professor in one of the University of Ilorin’s subjects for at least 10 years as of October 16, 2022.
  • Have shown astute management qualities to retain the University’s reputation for peace, inclusion, and academic stability
  • Be a nationally and internationally renowned academic with expertise in information and communication technology (ICT), as well as extensive experience at the highest levels of university administration
  • Be a professor with experience in teaching, research, and community service
  • Be a person with an entrepreneurial and inventive mindset, as well as a track record that aligns with the vision and goal of a world-class university
  • Be a person with great character and the capacity to lead courageously and effectively
  • Be a someone that can motivate others to study more and reach out to people from all walks of life
  • Be in good health, have a pleasant demeanor, unquestionable honesty, and a strong moral character in order to inspire and maintain moral discipline among staff and students, and
  • Have a track record of establishing relationships and obtaining financing from both domestic and international sources

Method of Application

Each candidate must provide thirty (30) signed copies of their curriculum vitae, as well as an electronic CD copy in PDF format, appropriately labeled, with the following information:

  1. Names in full

  5. Current mailing address, including e-mail address, as well as phone number
  6. Marital Status
  7. Number of Children (With Dates of birth)
  8. Institutions Attended (With Dates)
  9. Academic Qualifications (With Dates)
  10. Professional Qualifications (With Dates)
  11. Honours, Distinctions, and Membership of Learned Societies and Professional bodies
  12. Publications, discoveries, and/or inventions (giving all relevant details)
  13. Work experience in the university system (include names and dates of institutions)
  14. Details about administrative and management experience in the university system, as well as proof of fund attraction
  15. Specific services to local, national, international communities and organizations (giving dates, institutions/establishments, and status)
  16. Present Employment: Status, Salary, and Employer
  17. Extra-Curricular activities
  18. Three referees’ names and addresses (one of whom must, where appropriate, be the head of the establishment where the applicant currently works).

Applicants must provide 30 hard copies and a soft copy of a statement of the candidate’s vision for the University in the next five years in not more than 1,000 words and not less than 600 words with their applications.

Service Terms and Conditions

The appointment will be for a five-year term, and the remuneration and other terms of service will be as determined by the Federal Government and the Council for Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities.

Mode of Submission of Application

Not later than 3.30 p.m. on Monday, May 16, 2022, applications should be sent to the Registrar and Secretary to Council, University of Ilorin, P.M.B. 1515, Ilorin, Nigeria, in a sealed envelope clearly marked “Application for the Post of Vice-Chancellor” (six weeks from the date of this advertisement).

The following Referees must submit or mail their reports to the Registrar under confidential cover in an envelope clearly marked “Referee’s Report for the Post of Vice-Chancellor” no later than Monday, May 16th, 2022.

Candidates who will be 65 years old on October 16, 2022, are not eligible to apply.

Only those applicants who have been shortlisted will be invited to an interview.
