UNDESA Italian Junior Professional Officers Program 2022
The UNDESA Italian Junior Professional Officers Program 2021/2022 is now accepting applications.

The Italian Junior Professional Officers Program (JPO Program) is a multilateral technical cooperation project sponsored by the Italian government and administered by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN/DESA).
It allows Italian individuals with a Master’s degree who have strong English and Italian skills and is under 30 years old (31 or 33 for graduates in medicine and surgery) to earn two years of work experience with foreign organizations.
A small number of posts have been allocated to applicants from poor nations in the last four years (Least Developed Countries and priority Countries for the Italian Development Cooperation).
The Program serves two purposes: on the one hand, it assists international organizations in carrying out their activities by providing skilled personnel for a two-year period; on the other hand, it provides young qualified professionals seeking an international career with the opportunity to gain two years of work experience, increasing their chances of finding a suitable job in international organizations or in the international field.
Benefits
Salary, medical insurance, life insurance, pension contributions, as well as allowances for travel shipping, installation at the duty station, and repatriation are all included in Junior Professional Officer contracts.
UNDESA Italian Junior Professional Officers Program Requirements
- The applicant must have been born on or after January 1, 1991, to be eligible (1 January 1990 for graduates in Medicine; January 1, 1988, for graduates in Medicine who have already been awarded a post-graduate medical specialization degree).
- Nationality: Italian
- English and Italian fluency
- have one of the advanced university degrees (or degree combinations) listed below, which was earned before the application deadline:
- Laurea Magistrale/Specialistica Laurea Magistrale/Specialistica Laurea Magistrale/Speci
- Laurea Magistrale in a single cycle.
- Laurea/Laurea Triennale plus a Master’s degree from a university.
- A bachelor’s degree plus a master’s degree from a university.
A restricted number of slots will be allocated to applicants from poor nations for the 2021/2022 season (Least Developed Countries and priority Countries for the Italian Development Cooperation). To be considered for the 2021/2022 edition, these individuals must satisfy all of the following criteria:
- born on or after the 1st of January, 1991 (January 1, 1990, for graduates in Medicine; January 1, 1988, for graduates in Medicine who have already been awarded a post-graduate medical specialization degree)
- Afghanistan, Albania, Angola, Bangladesh, Benin, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cambodia, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, El Salvador, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, Iraq, Jordan, Kenya, Kiribati, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Lebanon, Lesotho, Liber
- fluency in the English language (knowledge of Italian will be considered an asset)
- have one of the advanced university degrees (or degree combinations) listed below, which was earned before the application deadline:

Additional Qualification
Given the extremely competitive nature of the Italian JPO Program, as well as the increasingly demanding skill sets and levels of expertise desired by international organizations, the following are usually seen as valuable assets:
- understanding of other UN official languages / developing-country languages
- extra-academic credentials and/or training courses
- experience in a professional setting (minimum one year)
- Client orientation, collaboration, communication, responsibility, planning, and organization are all important skills.
