Tips on How to Score High and Pass Post-UTME – In this post, I’ll give you tips on how to score high and pass the Post-UTME exam in 2022.

Every candidate wants to do well on their Post-UTME. If you get a score above the cut-off mark, you can get admission into the University or Polytechnic.

You can apply to study at UNN, UI, OAU, FUTA, ABU Zaria, UNIBEN, DELSU, FUTO, etc. I promise you that this post will help you.

I worked hard for a long time to get admission into the University. At the time, my problem was a low JAMB score. Even when I was able to get something decent, post-UTME kept getting in the way.

There’s no doubt that many students’ JAMB scores are very good. Unfortunately, some people end up with low scores on their Post UTME. Even though they got a high JAMB score, they weren’t accepted.

The reason for this is that many Nigerian students relax after doing well on the JAMB. They think that getting in is a sure thing because they got 250 or more on the JAMB test.

Even if you get a high score on the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board examination, you may not be admitted. In the race for admission, you know you won when you see your name on the admission list. That’s when you can brag about how you beat UNILAG, FUTA, UNIBEN, UNIZIK, etc.

There are two steps to getting into the University or Polytechnic:

  • Get a high score in the JAMB exams.
  • Add to your performance with a great Post-UTME result.

Here are some tips on how to do well on your post-UTME exam.

Understand Post UTME Format

The first step to scoring well and passing your post-UTME is to understand the exam pattern of your preferred school.

Universities and polytechnics have different ways of doing Post UTME. Some schools might give aptitude tests, while others might ask for documents. Even schools that give post-UTME exams use different formats.

For example, in UNN, applicants write their four JAMB subject combinations. Students at DELSU and RSU are tested on both qualitative and quantitative reasoning, as well as current affairs.

It is essential to understand the types of questions you will face on the day of the exam. You can’t afford to be ignorant of this information.

Some students only find out about these formats a few weeks before their exams. Most of the time, it doesn’t end well for them.

You need to know how the questions are set at the school you want to go to. It will help you get ready for your post-UTME so you can do well on it.

Study the Post UTME Syllabus

You must study the Post UTME syllabus in order to pass the post-UTME exam. A post-UTME syllabus is an outline for a subject that tells you what you need to read and understand.

Inside the syllabus, you will learn about the most important topics for the exam questions. In the syllabus, you might see things like “Students should know this and that.”

How to Get the Post UTME Syllabus

The JAMB syllabus is the post-UTME syllabus. Students preparing to write JAMB subject combinations utilize this resource for preparation.

For example, if you want to apply for Nursing Sciences at UNN, your Post-UTME subjects are Use of English, Biology, Physics, and Chemistry.

For your exam, all you have to do is study the JAMB syllabus on these topics.

The JAMB syllabus is used by institutions that do screening based on the JAMB subject combination.

Schools that give quantitative or qualitative tests don’t use the JAMB syllabus. In this case, you would need to look at past questions to know how the exam is set up.

The best option to obtain a post-UTME syllabus is to communicate with students and aspirants of the institution of your choice. Students at your school of choice would be able to tell you what to expect on the Post UTME exam.

Also, as you talk to other applicants, you’ll find out if what you’re studying fits with the school’s Post-UTME syllabus.

Develop Good Study Skills

If you want to pass your post-UTME, you need to learn how to study well. Without a good plan for studying, you wouldn’t do well on your exam.

Finding out what works best for you is an important part of figuring out how to study well. You need to know when you can study best. It could be that you understand better at night or early in the morning.

Don’t make the mistake of planning your study based on what your friends say. Find what works best for you and keep doing that.

Set goals for your study plan that you can reach. You can choose to study Chemistry on Mondays, Biology on Wednesdays, and so on.

Planning your study helps you get organized and keep track of your progress. Every morning when you wake up, you’ll have a plan for what you want to study or accomplish that day.

Here’s an important tip that every student should use every day. Make sure you know what you want to study the next day before you go to bed. It gives you a sense of direction and a reason to keep going.

Also, it teaches you how to study and understand what you’re studying. It’s important that you understand what you’re reading as you go along.

When you are studying for your exam, there are things you must do and things you must not do.

How to Develop Effective Study Skills

  • Read every page of your textbook carefully so you can understand it.
  • Practice remembering what you have read at the end of your study session.
  • After your study schedule, you can test yourself with questions.
  • Check out YouTube and Google to learn more about difficult topics.
  • Talk with other aspiring students about topics in the syllabus.
  • Don’t check your WhatsApp or Facebook messages when you should be studying.
  • Take short breaks every 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Drink water to stay dehydrated.
  • During study hours, refrain from social interaction.
  • Eat well before you study. Don’t read on an empty stomach.
  • Exercise daily to improve cognitive function.

Set Up A Good Place to Study

For your study plan to work, you need to set up a good place to study. A poor study environment might limit your ability to prepare for your post-UTME examinations.

A peaceful place to study can boost your mood and help you reach your study goals.

Here’s an example of a quiet place to study:

  • Private or public library.
  • A quiet place in your home.
  • University or Polytechnic campus.
  • Elementary and secondary school classrooms.

The places mentioned above are examples of serene places to study.

Students who live near campus can study in a calm environment.

You can also go to public high schools on the weekends to study. Even better, you can create a place at home where you can study without being distracted.

If you want to study somewhere other than your house or compound, make sure it is safe and secure.

A good piece of advice is to never take your browsing phone to the library or anywhere else to study. Leave your Android device at home so you won’t be distracted from social media.

Use a torchlight phone so you don’t miss important calls.

If you can stop being addicted to social media, you will do well on your post-UTME and first-year exams.

Practice Post UTME Past Questions

As you prepare for your post-UTME exam, you must test your capability using past questions. Exam questions from past years are a good way to study because they give you a chance to practice.

You need to get a copy of the past post-UTME questions for the school you want to go to. For example, if you wanted to go to OAU to study law, you would get the past questions for OAU law students.

As you study the past questions, you’ll start to get used to how the exam is set up. You will be familiar with the exam format. It will give you an idea of how to improve the way you study.

Don’t make the mistake of cramming answers from post-UTME past questions. You have to learn how to solve the problems. Even if you see the same question in the exam, you would get confused.

This is why you hear stories of aspirants complaining that UNIBEN or AAU did not give them their real score. What may have happened is that they crammed the past questions and thought they would do well. It does not work like that.

Take your time to practice and solve problems from past questions. You could answer questions in any format that was similar.

How to Get Post UTME Past Questions

You can get the post UTME past questions from your most preferred institution. You should find out how to get the past questions booklet by making inquiries. Also, check the Playstore to see if your school has a Post-UTME question app.

The school management doesn’t keep track of past questions and answers. It’s people who put together the past questions and answers.  You need to find out what the reliable question booklet is for your most preferred institution.

If you don’t live close to a University or Polytechnic campus, you can find past questions and answers online. This is why you must interact with other aspirants.

There must always be a prospective student who knows important things about the school.

Also, stay alert so you don’t fall for scammers.

Boost Your Confidence in the Post UTME Exam

You must have an optimal degree of confidence in order to pass your post-UTME examination.

Believe that you can get a good score and get admitted. Don’t think that you’re such a dunce that you can’t pass the post-JAMB examination.

No student is so stupid that they can’t do well in an exam. The problem might be that you don’t know what your strengths and weaknesses are or what works best for you.

Think in a positive way that you won’t fail the exam this year. When you have a positive way of thinking, it gives you positive energy. You’ll be able to work harder on your studies and beat the cut-off mark.

Getting more confident can sometimes hurt you. I mean people who would let their high JAMB score get into their heads.

A few years ago, the night before my UNN. I met a Pharmacy aspirant who had taken his exam earlier that day.

He kept saying how proud he was that he had finished UNN. He said that he wouldn’t get anything less than 350/400.

During my first year, I never saw him. He did not get admission.

No matter what your JAMB score or WAEC grade is, you should stay humble. It is one thing to do well on the JAMB test and another to see your name on the list of people who were admitted.

As you prepare for your exams, build your confidence by being humble. Let your admission letter speak for you. Do not show off to your friends how you have read a book from front to back.

Practice Post UTME Questions Online

It is vital to practice post-UTME questions online in order to become familiar with the exam. With the exception of a few schools, post-UTME is now computer-based (CBT). Because of this, you need to learn how to answer CBT questions.

Even if you don’t have a laptop, you can use Google Playstore to get free post-UTME apps.

I always tell people to use Myschool if they want to practice aptitude tests online. They have the best classroom for aspirants to learn.

There is a forum for students at myschool. You can meet other aspirants and converse with them.

For example, if you don’t agree with the answer given to a question. You can write a comment explaining why the answer is wrong. In this way, you improve your chances of being successful.

Stay Up-To-Date on Post-UTME News

To do well in your post-UTME, you need to know current information about your school of choice. Information gathering is just as important as studying.

If you stay up-to-date, you’ll know when the post-UTME form is available or the nature of the questions for the exam.

As an aspirant, you must take the time to acquire as much information as possible.

Just go to Google and type in the name of your school. Read about the school’s history and its structure on Wikipedia.

Google Chrome makes it easy to find information that is important. You will always see news about your school of choice on your browser.

Also, read as much as you can about the course you want to study.

I must warn you. Sometimes, all of this information can be too much. You start to wish you were a student while you put your books down.

Joining Facebook groups is the easiest way to get information. Groups created for prospective students and current students of your school of choice.

On Facebook, input the name of the school you want to attend. You would see lots of groups.

Register for Your post-UTME Exam

You cannot pass or score well in the post-UTME exam if you do not register for it. This is why you need to know the latest news about your school of choice.

Many people make mistakes when they register by putting in the wrong information. It is usually the fault of the computer operator who is handling their application.

Register at a trusted computer centre. Check the application once more before submitting it on the school portal.

Visit or call the University ICT to solve your problem with your application.

Also, make sure you submit the screening application before the deadline. You don’t want to run all over the place when the application is not available.

Know the Date and the Venue of Your Exam

Knowing the exam date and location is crucial for your success in the exam.

After the end of screening registration, schools would invite students to take an aptitude test. If your preferred institution does not conduct a post-JAMB exam, you have nothing to worry about.

Check the official school website or Facebook to get important information.
Know when to print out your post UTME slip. The slip contains information on your exam’s date, time, and location.

Arrive Early at Your Examination Venue

It is mandatory to be at the exam centre early. It helps you get used to the place so that you can stay calm and relaxed.

Do not rush through studying for your exam. Arriving late to campus can negatively impact your performance.

Unless you live near the school, get there a day before the exam. Some students would have to start such a trip at least two days before the exam, like those who live in Lagos and are writing the UNN Post-UTME exam.

Eat Right and Stay Healthy

Staying healthy is important for your physical and mental health. Take care of your body and work out regularly.

It might surprise you to know7 that physical activity enhances memory retention. Physical activity helps your brain work better.

Eating healthy food will help you stay physically healthy.

Don’t eat junk food like snacks and soft drinks often. Eat vegetables and food that is high in protein.

Eat a lot of fruits to help your body work better.

Stay Calm and Overcome Post-UTME Anxiety

Anxiety is a monster in your head. It could make you fail your exam despite adequate preparations. You would be unorganized as a result of the tension.

You’ll start to doubt your abilities. If you are in this kind of mood, you might pick the wrong answer in your exam. Believe me, I’m speaking from experience.

On the day of your exam, you might feel nervous. You are intimidated by the number of students taking the same examination. The worst case is you hear that only 100 students will get admitted into your course.

You should know that getting admission is a personal race. Don’t wish yourself a failure because of student statistics. You must do well enough to beat the cut-off mark.

Try to stay calm on the day of your exam. Control your breathing and admit that you will succeed.

Follow the Post-UTME Exam Rules and Regulations

The key to passing your screening is to follow the rules for your post-UTME exam. Many students fail after taking the JAMB because they don’t follow simple instructions.

Listen to all of the instructions before starting your exam. Try your best to follow all the rules and regulations. Don’t try to be cunning.

Learn How to Answer Post-UTME Questions

If you knew how to answer post-UTME questions, you would do well in the exam. Get familiar with past exam questions to avoid making common mistakes.

You should never waste time on any questions. To save time, skip questions that are hard for you to answer. Post-UTME exams have time limits. That is, you only have a limited amount of time to answer the questions.

It’s a good idea to double-check the answers you chose. Never rush to submit your exam. There is no prize for being the first person to finish the screening exam. Ensure that you use all of the time allotted for the examination.

Make Sure you Check Your Post-UTME Result

Your post-UTME results will be out 24 hours after your exam. Don’t be afraid to check your screening result.

Knowing your post-UTME score would help you figure out how likely you are to get admission.

You will do well on the exam if you stick to the effective way to study that I’ve described above. It is my sincere hope that your efforts will pay off.

Calculate Your Aggregate Score

Calculate your total score using your JAMB and post-UTME score.

The formula for figuring out the total admission score is different for each school.

Some schools add the JAMB and screening scores together and divide them by two.

Most schools do not let you use a calculator on the post-UTME exam. You need to get used to solving problems without a calculator.
