Ted Scripps Fellowship

Five applicants will be chosen to audit classes, engage in field excursions and weekly seminars, and work on a major project.

The Center for Environmental Journalism, which is part of the University of Colorado Boulder’s College of Media, Communication, and Information, is hiring for these roles.

The fellowship is available to full-time journalists from any media who want to improve and widen their understanding of environmental concerns.

It is intended for great journalists who are serious about pursuing a career in professional journalism.

Fellowship

  • A $71,000 stipend is provided as part of the program. Tuition and costs are also covered, as well as participation at the annual SEJ and NASW conferences. While they may not be able to provide the same perks as the institution, they may provide paid sick leave and bus tickets for local and regional travel.

Ted Scripps Fellowship Requirements

  • Applicants must have five years of full-time professional journalistic experience and a BA or BS college degree, at the very least.
  • Reporters, editors, producers, photojournalists, documentarians, and feature writers are among the candidates.
  • Applicants might be paid employees or full-time freelancers.
  • It is not necessary to have prior experience covering the environment.

The following are particular components that must be included in a comprehensive Ted Scripps Fellowships in Environmental Journalism application:

Resume/CV

Include your schooling, employment experience as a professional journalist, and any journalistic awards or distinctions you’ve won in a PDF résumé (with the year awarded). 

Briefly explain your responsibilities in addition to the dates you held each role.

Professional Autobiography/Cover Letter

Please submit a PDF document that answers the following questions. 

Do not repeat your recommended study plan or project idea in your essay. 

This should be kept to a maximum of 1,250 words.

  • Why are you applying for the fellowship and why are you the best candidate? Describe your journalistic career and the ideals that have influenced your work. Answer the following questions in your response:
  • What are your most notable accomplishments?
  • Why do you want to write about environmental concerns, and how will a Ted Scripps Fellowship help you?
  • Freelancers: List the tasks you’ve done in the previous 12 months, who you worked for, and a few words about what you did at the conclusion of your Professional Autobiography. Explain who your clientele are if they aren’t well-known.

Study Plan & Project Proposal

Attach a PDF document outlining what you want to study during your fellowship, including the academic topics you intend to focus on and some of the courses you may want to audit.

Professional Work Samples

You must provide a minimum of three professional work samples. 

Please keep in mind that all work samples must be merged and supplied as a single file. 

Include a link to your samples instead of separate files if you have more than three samples if the file size is high (10MB+).

  • During the application process, the system will gather contact information for three references.
  • References may be contacted through email with a request for a confidential letter of reference, and they will be given adequate time to respond if contacted.
  • One letter should come from your direct supervisor or, in the case of freelancers, from an editor with whom you have worked closely.
  • You are not needed to provide a letter of reference with your application; just your contact information is required at this time.
