Social Science Research Council Just Tech Fellowship 2022

The Just Tech Fellowship 2022 from the Social Science Research Council is now accepting applications.

Social Science Research

The Fair Tech Fellowship helps scholars and practitioners explore and construct more just, egalitarian, and representational technology futures by supporting and mobilizing diverse and cross-sector cohorts.

Fellows will identify and question social, political, and economic inequalities caused by new technologies, as well as propose solutions that promote social, political, and economic rights.

2021 Fellowship Theme: Crisis and Reparation

This call invites applicants to explore questions like the following:

  • During and after crises, how do new technologies reduce or exacerbate long-term inequities? In times of disaster, how can technology contribute to or detract from community resilience?
  • How might multiple forms of knowledge creation and communication, ranging from art to data science to community-based research, aid our understanding of the crisis-technology relationship? How may these investigations help us conceive alternate possibilities in the wake of a disaster?
  • How can the lived experiences of marginalized peoples, such as ethnic and religious minorities, gender nonconforming and handicapped groups, and poor people, influence the creation of fair technologies, particularly in times of crisis?

Benefits of Social Science Research Council

  • Fellows receive two-year rewards of $100,000 each year, as well as generous supplemental funding packages to cover unexpected costs and seed money to work on joint projects with other Just Tech Fellows.
  • The fellowship will give the space and time for in-depth thought, as well as a supportive community and possibilities for ambitious co-creation.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must have either a bachelor’s degree in the arts, fine arts, or sciences or a track record of accomplishment in their respective disciplines.
  • Although residents of any nation may apply, fellows are required to live in the United States for the duration of their fellowship. The SSRC will not sponsor visas and will not be shown on visa applications as an associate or sponsor.
