The Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowships 2022-2023 are now accepting applications.

Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowships

The Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowships, funded by Lord Sainsbury of Turville, were founded in 2000 to improve academic linkages with Japanese studies programs in Asia, Europe, Oceania, and North America.

The Fellowships allow participants to work in an academic atmosphere suitable to the completion of a published project.

The fellows will be assigned to a shared office space in Norwich and will be required to reside there for the duration of their term.

Fellowship

  • The £24,000 Fellowship will begin in September 2022 and will last for one year.
  • Please include your desired start date in your application for the six-month Fellowship. It’s possible that this can be worked out. The £12,000 Fellowship is for a period of six months. Fellowships of one year are suggested.

Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowship Requirements

  • Scholars with a PhD in any field of Japanese culture are eligible to apply.
  • Applicants working in the disciplines of visual studies, such as history of art, cultural heritage, archaeology, architecture, cinema studies, and digital humanities, will be given priority.
  • Early Career Researchers will be given priority, as described by the AHRC as “individuals who are within eight years of receiving their PhD or similar professional training, or who are within six years of their first academic employment.”
  • Fellows must have a strong command of the English language, both verbally and in writing.

To apply for a Robert and Lisa Sainsbury Fellowship, send them an email to get an application form.

The application form should be submitted to [email protected] once it has been completed. Please include the following documents in addition to the application form:

  • Curriculum Vitae (please mention the date your PhD is likely to be granted, if it hasn’t already been conferred) and a letter of recommendation
  • a writing sample (for example a published article, or a core chapter of the PhD)

All application materials must be written in English.

Two letters of recommendation should also be delivered by email or mail before the application deadline.

If delivered by mail, they must be signed and sealed by the referee and sent to the Sainsbury Institute, 64 The Close, Norwich, NR1 4DH, United Kingdom.

If they are submitted through email, the referee should send them directly to [email protected].
