PhD scholarship on Succession Planning in Family Businesses

Succession is one of the most important events in the life of a family company, and its success is strongly reliant, among other things, on Next Gen’s ability to succeed their parents. As a result, we notably encourage PhD proposals that scientifically investigate the repercussions of favoring family members as successors (e.g., family business performance). We also welcome PhD papers that address succession planning from an intriguing accounting or finance viewpoint.

The post is in the Accounting Department. Professor Thomas Plenborg and Associate Professor Jeppe Christoffersen are leading this initiative, which is focused on family business succession. It thus addresses current problems and strives to contribute to public, professional, and corporate conversations on the subject. As a result, the PhD must be revitalized by interacting with businesses and professionals as part of the research and dissemination process.

The PhD student will work closely with their supervisors and benefit from the Department of Accounting’s and CBS’s worldwide research environment. Fieldwork, data collecting, and registration data are all eligible for financial support for this project.

The three-year PhD program at CBS allows you to conduct research under the guidance of CBS faculty while also receiving research training. The program is quite international, and you will be asked to attend international research conferences and spend time as a visiting PhD student in another country.

Worth of Scholarship

  • A PhD fellowship lasts three years and involves teaching responsibilities equivalent to six months of labor (840 work hours).
  • According to the national Danish collective agreement, the scholarships are fully paid employment.
  • The monthly compensation ranges from DKK 27,871 to DKK 33,659, depending on seniority, and includes a 17.1% pension contribution.

PhD scholarship on Succession Planning in Family Businesses | Eligibility Criteria

The candidate must meet the following criteria in order to be considered.

  • hold a master’s degree in basic education (equivalent to the 3 + 2 Bologna process)
  • have obtained a mark of 10 (or equivalent) on the Danish 7-point grading system for the master’s thesis
  • before beginning the PhD program at CBS, you must have finished your master’s degree.
  • master academic English writing and speaking at a high level

How to Apply for the PhD scholarship on Succession Planning in Family Businesses

A five-page project description must be included in the application (see link below). The following items must be included in the project description:

  • a presentation of a unique research problem
  • an explanation of the theoretical framework and procedure that was used at the beginning
  • a presentation of the empirical data that will be used
  • a three-year strategy of action

Copies of the following documents must be submitted in addition to the project description:

  • a diploma for a bachelor’s degree or other similar credentials, as well as grade transcripts
  • a curriculum vitae that is succinct (CV)
  • a list of publications and articles (if applicable)
  • one example of a chosen piece of writing (e.g., a master’s thesis)
