PhD Scholarship in Material Science and/or Civil Engineering in Australia 2022
For the academic year 2022/23, Flinders University in Australia is accepting applications for a PhD Scholarship in Material Science and/or Civil Engineering.
Each year, the building and construction sector consumes around 700,000 tonnes of plastics (20 percent of total plastic usage in Australia); less than 12% of this is recycled, and more than 40% is disposed of in landfills. Although plastic is a dependable building material, changing raw material prices and quality difficulties with recycled materials may limit market expansion in the future. This pressing issue may be solved by creating new sophisticated recycling and automated manufacturing techniques that will allow a large amount of recovered plastic waste to be used in lightweight prefabricated construction products (LPBPs).
This will speed up the recycling of plastic waste, lowering the cost of LPBPs while maintaining quality control.
This project’s major goal is to increase the fire resistance of recycled plastics used in LPBPs. The key project result will be the optimization of the fire-retardant material composition in the mixture to produce a fire-resistant, environmentally friendly, high-performance, low-cost LPBP.
Worth of Scholarship
The scholarship comprises the following:
- A tax-free allowance of $28,854 per year (2022 rate).
- The scholarship will be for three years, with the possibility of a six-month extension.
- The student will have the chance to work with the University of Melbourne’s research team (Prof. Tuan Ngo) as well as industry partners.
PhD Scholarship in Material Science | Eligibility Criteria
A student must meet the following criteria to be considered for this scholarship:
- Do you have a background in Materials Science or Civil Engineering research? (being familiar with nanotechnology and characterization).
- Be either a local or overseas candidate (Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident).
- Because the award does not cover tuition fees, support for them must be supplied individually.
- Have an Australian Honours degree Class 1 or 2A or equivalent qualification (at least AQF Level 8) with a research component of at least 6 months full-time study achieving Distinction (75 percent) OR evidence of equivalent research experiences, such as a significant first-author refereed publication or track record as an investigator on a research project or competitive grant.
In 2022, be able to start as a full-time PhD student at Flinders University.
How to Apply for the PhD Scholarship in Material Science
Those who apply for the scholarship must also apply for admission to a relevant HDR if they have not already done so.
Applicants acknowledge the following by submitting this separate application:
- The ‘Supervisor confirmation’ must refer to the scholarship application.
- Only if the candidate is successful in receiving the scholarship will the application for PhD admission be considered.
OR
- In their PhD admissions application, the applicant certifies that if they are not given the scholarship, their supervisors agree that the project and enrolment may still go on, and the candidate agrees.
- All additional PhD admissions applications submitted in response to this scholarship offer will be removed without being evaluated.
- Prospective applicants should provide their CV and a copy of their academic transcript to the project Lead Investigator, Dr. Aliakbar Gholampour, through email at [email protected], prior to submitting an application.
