Mandela Scholarship Fund at Leiden University in the Netherlands 2022
The Mandela Scholarship Funds for South African Students at Leiden University in the Netherlands is accepting applications for an exchange program in the 2022/23 academic year.
The Mandela Scholarship is for South African students who desire to study for one semester at Leiden University in order to broaden their horizons and contribute to the development of their country.
Leiden University is one of Europe’s major international research institutions, having been established in 1575.
It consists of seven faculties in the arts, humanities, and sciences, which are scattered throughout Leiden and The Hague.
The University employs around 6,700 people and has 29,520 students.
The university’s motto is ‘Praesidium Libertatis,’ which means ‘Bastion of Freedom.’
Worth of Award
The scholarship includes:
- a one-semester study abroad program’s tuition expenses (if applicable)
- Exchange students are excused from paying tuition costs due to the exchange agreement.
- Monthly living allowance: € 1000
- AON Student Insurance supported the insurance, which was handled through Leiden University’s Scholarships Team.
Mandela Scholarship Requirements
Applicants must be:
- permanent residents of South Africa.
- enrolled at a South African University.
- motivated to upgrade or extend their knowledge in order to make a contribution towards the development of South Africa.
How to Apply for Mandela Scholarship
- Fill out an online application for admission to a Leiden University exchange/study abroad program.
- Complete the Mandela scholarship application form if you’ve been accepted to an exchange/study abroad program.
- Send your completed scholarship application form to [email protected] as a scanned email attachment. Make certain you include all needed documentation, including:
- Leiden University’s acceptance letter for exchange/study abroad
- Motivation letter for a scholarship
- a recent transcript of your South African university’s records
- CV that is up to date
- A photocopy of your current passport is required (s)
- Two original endorsement letters (one of which should be from an academic staff member)
- Documentation demonstrating the status of any additional awards you’ve applied for.
- Proof that you have enough money to live in the Netherlands (the Mandela scholarship does not cover all expenses). This might be in the form of:
- a letter from your student grant provider detailing the amount and length of your award, or
- a copy of your most recent bank statement, or
- a notarized declaration stating that your parents are financially capable of supporting you
