The Mandela Scholarship is for South African students who desire to study for one semester at Leiden University in order to broaden their horizons and contribute to the development of their country.

His Excellency President Nelson Mandela of South Africa was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Leiden University in the Netherlands on March 12, 1999. The Mandela Scholarship Fund was established at Leiden University to commemorate this historic occasion.

Scholarship

The scholarship comprises the following items:

  • a one-semester study abroad program’s tuition expenses (if applicable)
  • Exchange students are excused from paying tuition costs due to the exchange agreement.
  • Monthly living allowance: €1,000
  • AON Student Insurance supported the insurance, which was handled through Leiden University’s Scholarships Team.

Mandela Scholarship Fund 2022 | Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Residents of South Africa on a permanent basis.
  • enrolled in a university in South Africa
  • inspired to further their education or expand their expertise in order to contribute to South Africa’s growth

Selection Process

All applications will be reviewed by the selection committee, which will choose scholarship winners based on academic merit, motivation, and potential future contributions to South Africa’s growth.

The Scholarships Team will notify candidates of the results:

In June, for September-starting programs

For programs starting in February, apply in November.

How to Apply for the Mandela Scholarship Fund 2022

  • Fill out an online application for admission to a Leiden University exchange/study abroad program.
  • Complete the Mandela scholarship application form if you’ve been accepted to an exchange/study abroad program.
  • Send your completed scholarship application form to [email protected] as a scanned email attachment. Make certain you include all needed documentation, including:
  1. Leiden University’s acceptance letter for exchange/study abroad
  2. Scholarship motivation letter
  3. Recent transcript of records from your South African University
  4. Up-to-date CV
  5. Photocopy of your valid passport(s)
  6. Two original endorsement letters (one of which should be from an academic staff member)
  7. Documentation demonstrating the status of any additional awards you’ve applied for.

Proof that you have enough money to live in the Netherlands (the Mandela scholarship does not cover all expenses). This can take the following forms:

  • a letter from your student grant provider detailing the amount and length of your award, or
  • a copy of your most recent bank statement, or
  • a notarized declaration stating that your parents are financially capable of supporting you
