Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) lsu Elihle Awards 2022 (R25,000 prize)
The lsu Elihle Awards 2022 are now accepting applications.
The awards aim to impact the attitudes and behaviors of opinion and decision-makers, as well as individuals, throughout the nation and continent, based on the assumption that the media frames disputes in society and has significant power and, therefore, the capacity to create good change. The Awards have been running for six years this year.
These awards are intended to encourage journalists to bring attention to problems that affect children on the African continent. Journalists from over twenty countries have applied in prior years, and a variety of child-related concerns have been discussed. This demonstrates that the awards have a lot of clout throughout the continent. They urge journalists to submit their original article ideas before the deadline.
Prizes
- Overall winner: R25,000
- First runner up: R15,000
- Second runner up: R10,000
- Mandy Rossouw Category: Between R10,000 and R25 ,000
MMA lsu Elihle Awards | Eligibility Criteria
- Professional journalists working in Africa, whether hired or freelancing, are eligible to apply.
- The competition is conducted entirely in English. As a result, all submissions and story ideas must be written in English.
- Employees of Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) and the adjudicators, as well as their immediate relatives, are not eligible to compete.
- Each applicant is restricted to one entry; however, each media company is free to submit as many applications as it desires.
Stages of the Competition
First Stage: Submission of the story idea
Journalists submit their article ideas ahead of or on time for publication. These concepts will be judged by a panel of judges comprised of children, child rights experts, and an independent media practitioner. The top six finalists will be revealed online and via social media channels, as well as in traditional media, after the evaluation process.
Second Stage: Producing and publishing the full story
The top six journalists will get up to R10,000 in funding (depending on the number of finalists chosen) to investigate and develop their ideas into publishable content, which will subsequently be published or aired by a major news media outlet of their choice. Please note that individual journalists are solely responsible for approaching a media outlet and forming a publishing/broadcast deal with the outlet in question if their story idea is chosen as one of the top six.
Only the best three tales will be adjudicated, and only the top three will be awarded a monetary reward. The Isu Elihle Mandy Rossouw Accountability Category’s fourth cash reward is conditional. It will only be given out if a tale (in the top six) fits the category’s requirements. The sum of the Mandy Rossouw prize will be decided by the quality of the tale that is published.
