British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grants 2022 (up to £10,000)

The BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants 2022 are currently accepting applications.

Leverhulme Small Research Grants

Small research grants from the British Academy and the Leverhulme Trust are available to support primary research in the humanities and social sciences.

The BA/Leverhulme Small Research Grants are the British Academy’s most popular programme in terms of applications submitted and awards granted, and they are one of the Academy’s most visible initiatives, with grants given to academics working at about 100 institutions around the UK.

Award

These grants, worth up to £10,000 and valid for up to 24 months, are given to reimburse the costs of expenditures incurred as a result of a specific research project.

Leverhulme Small Research Grants | Eligibility Criteria

  • Postdoctoral scholars (or equivalents) who are ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom are eligible to apply.
  • Applications must be approved by the applicant’s employer, although they are not restricted to individuals with a certain status (e.g. Lecturer, Professor, etc).
  • Independent academics (who should pick ‘independent scholar’ as the applicable option from the list of organizations in Flexi-Grant) are eligible to apply.
  • Co-applicants may be from anywhere in the globe, but the Principal Applicant must live in the UK on a regular basis.

Additional Information

Grants are available for one to 24 months.

All submissions must show that funding is being sought for a clearly defined, distinct piece of study with a measurable result after the Academy-funded portion of the project is completed.

Your own institution should be your first port of call for financing (where applicable). Applications for less than £500 will not be accepted. A maximum award of £10,000 is available over a two-year period. This program accepts applications for both joint and individual initiatives. International consortia of academics are encouraged to apply, as long as the main applicant is a UK-based researcher.

Funds are available to help with initial project planning and development, direct research costs, and research advancement through workshops or conferences, as well as visits by or to partner scholars. Applicants may apply for funding for any combination of approved activities and cost up to a total of £10,000 in total. The Academy will evaluate all submissions on their own merits, regardless of the manner of investigation.

Grants are not intended to support exchange between the UK and overseas scholars where there is no planned program of activity to meet a clearly defined research objective (dissemination of results of research conducted under the aegis of the project for which funding is sought is a permissible purpose, but applications purely to organize an international conference, whether held in the UK or overseas, will not be considered); nor are grants intended solely to support attestation of (In other words, unless there is a direct connection to the dissemination of results of research funded under this proposal, this scheme does not cover applications that might have previously been made to the now-defunct British Academy’s Conference Support Grant or Overseas Conference Grant schemes.)
