Intracluster Medium of Galaxy Clusters PhD Scholarship in New Zealand 2022

For the academic year 2022/23, Victoria University of Wellington is accepting applications for the Intracluster Medium of Galaxy Clusters PhD Scholarship in New Zealand.

Intracluster Medium of Galaxy Clusters PhD Scholarship

A fully-funded PhD fellowship is available to focus on research into the intracluster medium of galaxy clusters with Dr. Yvette Perrott at Victoria University of Wellington. Currently, galaxy clusters are only used as precision cosmological probes in a few cases. This constraint stems from a lack of knowledge of how the clearly visible gas component interacts with the overall mass dominated by dark matter.

This research will use observation and simulation to look into flexible yet reliable ways for collecting cluster gas pressure profiles. This will be done utilizing existing and next-generation equipment and Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect data. It also entails looking at different approaches to model non-thermal pressure and its relationship to synchrotron radio emission.

Worth of Scholarship

  • The chosen applicant will earn a stipend of NZD $27,500 per year, which is tax-free. In addition, he will be reimbursed for all university tuition expenses as well as money to attend international conferences (if possible).
  • The scholarship will be granted for a three-year term.
