Ida B. Wells Fellowship in USA for Journalists of Colour 2022 (Win $20,000)

In 2022, Type Investigations, previously the Investigative Fund, is accepting applications for the Ida B Wells Fellowship, which aims to encourage diversity in journalism by assisting in the creation of a pipeline of investigative reporters of color with different backgrounds, experiences, and interests.

In the spring, Type Investigations runs a competition to choose the fellows, who must publish or broadcast their results in a U.S. media outlet within a year of starting the fellowship.

The fellowship is named after Ida B. Wells, a pioneering African-American activist and investigative writer who spearheaded the nation’s first anti-lynching campaign during the Jim Crow period. Wells, who was born into slavery and orphaned at the age of 16, not only debunked preconceptions about rape and lasciviousness that led to the lynching of black men and women, but also proved that their sole “crimes” were frequently challenging white dominance via acts of resistance or success. Despite death threats, she maintained her reporting.

According to studies, having a diverse editorial team is critical for generating accessible, relevant, and actionable news for all audiences. But over 90 years after Wells’ death, women and people of color still battle for acceptability, credibility, and opportunity as investigative reporters.

  • They’ll get access to research tools, legal counsel, professional mentors, and help with story placement and exposure.
