The I Tatti DHI Rom Joint Fellowship for African Studies in the United States in 2022 is being offered by the Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies and the German Historical Institute in Rome.

I Tatti and the DHI Rom hope that through awarding this fellowship, they will be able to encourage and promote more research on cultural interchange with and within the African continent during the time c.

1250-1750 by fostering and encouraging cross-disciplinary cooperation, notably among African academics and those working in European and North American institutions.

The fellowship provides a ten-month position in Italy for post-doctoral academics focusing on African studies (or related themes) to pursue historical research with the assistance of two institutions with vibrant academic communities.

Worth of Award

  • Fellows are provided with a work area at the DHI for the period of their visit, as well as access to the DHI library, archive, and collections.
  • They also get a monthly stipend of Euro 2,500, as well as a monthly rental supplement of Euro 1,000.
  • The stipend for I Tatti is USD 4,200 per month, including a one-time relocation fee bonus of up to USD 1,500. When feasible, a rent-free apartment will be made aside for the Fellow, but utilities will be charged. A housing subsidy will be granted to offset rental expenses if an apartment is not available.
  • Fellows have access to all of I Tatti’s benefits, including seven days a week usage of the Biblioteca Berenson and lunch with other Appointees Monday through Friday.

I Tatti DHI Rom Joint Fellowship Requirements

  • Scholars of various nationalities are encouraged to apply. Scholars from the African continent will be given special attention.
  • Applicants must have their PhD certificate in hand when they apply, and they will be required to scan it and upload a scan of it when completing their application. (Please attach a translation if the certificate is not in English.)
  • Applicants must be fluent in at least one of the following languages: English, Italian, German, or French, as well as a second language.

Similarly,

  • Both universities must approve each successful applicant. Fellows must be able to conduct the majority of their study using resources accessible in the city where they live.
  • The Fellow will be required to do original research on the issue for which their fellowship has been granted.
  • Applicants with no past affiliation with the two institutions will be given priority.

  • Each academic year, scholars may only apply for one sort of fellowship at I Tatti.
