How To Calculate CGPA In Nigerian Universities

In this article, we are going to inform you on how to calculate CGPA in Nigerian Universities.

As a student, have you ever tried to calculate your CGPA by yourself or you rely on the school to do that?

If yes, have you ever thought, what if their own calculation was wrong? You wouldn’t know.

It is quite appalling that a large number of students especially in Nigeria do not know what CGPA means not to talk of knowing how to calculate it.

Worse, they don’t even know that their CGPA determines their success or failure.

Knowing how to calculate CGPA and GPA is mandatory if you want to excel and graduate with a good grade.

If you are one of those that do not know how to calculate your CGPA, then, you’re in the right place.

What GPA and CGPA Means?

Just in case you don’t even know what GPA and CGPA mean or what it stands for, GPA which stands for Grade Points Average is a number that indicates how well or how high you scored in your courses on average and CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Points Average.

CGPA is also the average of grade points obtained by students in all the subjects or courses in all his years in school.

It can also be described as a measure of a student’s performance for all of his or her courses throughout his entire academic experience that is all semesters and years.

A good GPA helps in various ways like; helping you graduate with good honors, putting you on the top of your VC’s list of good students, helps you stand a chance of getting Grants and Scholarships, it adds flair to your curriculum vitae.

CGPAs are also used to determine every student’s Class of Honour (First class, Second class upper, Second class lower, Third class, etc.).

CGPA Grading Scale in Nigeria

In Nigeria, NUC’s standard grading scale Nigeria is 5.00.

Their grading system is classified into five categories which are;

  • First-class students whose CGPA is from 5.0 – 4.5.
  • Second class upper students whose CGPA are ranging from 4.49 – 3.5
  • Second class lower students whose CGPA are from 3.49 – 2.5
  • Third class students whose CGPA are from 2.49 – 1.5
  • Then finally, 1.49 – 1.0 are the pass grades.

You must be psyched to know exactly how to calculate your CGPA already so let’s get to it right now using the official grading scale.

Score/PercentageGrade LetterGrade Point
70 – 100     A     5.00
60 – 69   B     4.00
50 – 593.00
45 – 49D2.00
40 – 44 1.00
0 -39F0.00

For instance, if you have a result like this;

100L First Semester

COURSE CODESCOREGRADECREDIT UNIT
MAC 10186A2
MAC 15659C2
MAC 10595A2
MAC 11150C2
MAC 18466B2

The above result, to calculate the CGPA to must first acquire the GPA, and to achieve that, you must first get the grade points and quality points of all the courses.

  • For all the courses that the candidate scored an A, the Grade point (GP)is 5 while the Quality point (QP) is 10.
  • For the courses that have B, the Grade point is 4 and the Quality point 8.
  • Courses with C, Grade point is 3 and Quality point is 6.
  • With D have a Grade point of 2 and a Quality point of 4.
  • Courses with E have a Grade point of 1 and a Quality point of 2.

Finally, courses with F have a grade point and quality point of zero as they are equivalent to carryovers.

To get the GPA you must first calculate the sum of the credit/course units and the sum of the Quality and Grade points.

Credit Units (CU) for the result above: 2+2+2+2+2= 10

Grade points (GP): 5+3+5+3+4= 20

Quality points (QP): 10+6+10+6+8= 40

Finally, to know your Grade Point Average (GPA), you have to divide the Quality Point by Course/Credit Unit.

That is, 40/10 = 4.0.

This means that 4.0 is your First Semester GPA.

Don’t get too excited though because just so you know, we haven’t still obtained our CGPA.

We still have to calculate the result for an entirely different semester, the second semester.

100L Second Semester

COURSE CODESCOREGRADECREDIT UNIT
MAC 13156C2
MAC 12348D2
MAC 14599A2
MAC 19171B3
MAC 13560B2

With a result like this also,

Credit Units (CU) for the result above: 2+2+2+3+2= 11

Grade Point (GP): 3+2+5+4+4= 18

Quality points (QP): 6+4+10+8+8= 36

As said earlier, to get your Grade Point Average (GPA), you have to divide your Quality Point (QP) by your Credit/ Course Units (CU).

For instance, 36/11= 3.27.

Therefore, the GPA for 2nd Semester is 3.27.

Now that we have the GPAs for both semesters which are 4.0 and 3.27 respectively, we can now obtain the CGPA.

To acquire the Cumulative Grade Point Average, we have to get the sum of the two semesters Quality Point and their Course/Credit units.

For instance; Your total Course Unit for 100-Level First semester and the Second semester are 10 and 11.

Therefore, 10 + 11 = 21

Your total Quality Unit for 100-Level First semester and the Second semester are 40 and 36.

Therefore,40 + 36 = 76.

So now that we’ve acquired the sums of the First and Second Semesters Quality Units and Course Unit, we divide them. That is 76/21=3.61.

And voila! There you have it, your 100 Level CGPA is 3.61.

For the Second year (200 Level), we repeat the process.

Let’s say this is the result:

Credit Units (CU) for the result above: 2+3+2+3+2= 12

Quality points (QP): 10+6+8+10+8= 42

Now you divide the sums OF your Quality Point (QP) by your Credit/ Course Units (CU): 42/12= 3.5.
