The journalism grant program supports in-depth investigative journalism that breaks new ground and uncovers fresh facts regarding environmental crimes that occur in underdeveloped nations or across borders.

They’re searching for high-impact reporting, particularly on topics that the mainstream media ignores.

They are looking for suggestions for projects in print, web, audio, video, and multimedia on a range of platforms.

Data journalism, data visualization, and open-source intelligence (OSINT) journalism proposals are all welcome.

Thematic Areas in Grid Arendal Grants

This year, themes they will be interested in funding include (but are not limited to):

  • Illegal wildlife trade and poaching;
  • Illegal logging and timber trade;
  • Illegal cobalt mining;
  • Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated fisheries;
  • Plastic waste crimes;
  • Environmental crimes in the Arctic region.

Grant

Six awards totaling 20,000 Norwegian kroner (about €2,000) will be awarded.

Eligibility

  • You must be a professional journalist, either employed by a media outlet or a freelancer with a track record of publishing work in reputable outlets.
  • You must have investigative journalism experience.
  • Journalists from all corners of the globe are encouraged to apply. They welcome submissions from people with a variety of backgrounds.

Evaluation Criteria for Grid Arendal Grants

A team of GRID-Arendal employees will review the applications. They will consider the following, among other things:

  • Potential to reach a wide audience
  • Potential to create an impact and induce positive change
  • Journalist’s experience in investigative reporting (they may ask for professional references in the final phase)
  • Potential to reach a wide audience
  • Potential to create an impact and induce positive change
  • Journalist’s experience in investigative reporting (they may ask for professional references in the final phase)
  • Potential to reach a wide audience
  • Potential to create an impact and induce positive change
  • Journalist’s experience in investigative reporting (they may ask for professional references in the final phase)

  • Journalist’s experience in investigative reporting (they may ask for professional references in the final phase)

Application for Grid Arendal Grants

  • The application form has been completed. The application form may be found on the investigative journalism grants activity page, which can be located here.
  • CV / résumé
  • (Optional) letter of commitment or letter of interest from a media outlet (estimated project budget, indicating what grant money would pay for)

Budgets should be specified in Norwegian krone, and applications and accompanying documentation should be written in English.

All documents should be compiled into a single PDF and forwarded to Romain Langeard with the title “GRANT 2022 Name” at [email protected].

Applications that are either incomplete or do not match these criteria will be rejected.
