Google PhD Fellowship in Computer Science and Related Areas for African Students 2022

Google is presently accepting applications for the Google PhD Fellowship Program from excellent African students interested in pursuing PhD level study in Computer Science and related fields.

The Google PhD Fellowship program is a primary focus for Google for cultivating and maintaining excellent relationships with the academic community. Examine the steps below to discover more about the Fellowship’s operation, eligibility requirements, and application procedure.

Direct applications from students are welcomed. There is no restriction to the number of students from any university that may apply.

Worth of Scholarship

  • $30,000 to cover stipend and other research-related expenditures, as well as travel costs, including international travel.
  • The monies are paid directly to the institution, which will distribute them to the students to meet their fees and stipend as needed.
  • The money is being provided as an unrestricted gift, and Google does not pay for overhead on such contributions.
  • The student will also be paired with a Google Research Mentor, who we believe will become a significant resource for the student.
  • As a result of earning the fellowship, the student has no employment ties with Google.
  • Intellectual property limitations do not apply to fellowship participants until they complete an internship with Google.
  • Fellowship grantees who are interning at Google are subject to the same intellectual property and other contractual duties as all other Google interns.
  • An internship at Google is suggested, but not guaranteed or needed, for Fellowship students.

Google PhD Fellowship | Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a full-time PhD program in an African university. Applicants who are in their first year of a part-time PhD program and want to move to full-time jobs are also encouraged to apply.
  • Students must continue enrolled in the PhD program during the Fellowship year or forfeit the scholarship.
  • Applicants must be working on a PhD in Computer Science or a closely related field.
  • Employees of Google and their immediate families are ineligible.
  • Students who have previously received a corporate fellowship are not eligible.

For current undergraduate/students master’s as well as professionals

  • Students must be current full-time Undergraduate or Masters students in an African university. Professionals must be employed or linked with an African-registered organization.
  • Professionals must be employed/affiliated with an organization registered in Africa or India to be eligible for the grant, and acceptance is contingent on their enrolling in a full-time PhD program at an African or Indian institution within the year.
  • The award of a Google Fellowship does not imply acceptance into a university’s PhD program. The awardee must also complete the PhD admissions procedure at the institute/university where he or she desires to enroll for a PhD.
  • The Google Fellowship will be granted according to the norms and guidelines of the institute/university where the awardee registers for the Ph.D program.
  • Employees of Google and their immediate families are not eligible.
  • Applicants who have previously been awarded a corporate fellowship are unable to apply.

How to Apply for the Google PhD Fellowship

The application will be completed entirely online. In order to finish an application, you must do the following:

  • Resume of a student candidate with connections to his or her website and publications (if available)
  • Transcripts (mark sheets) from the first year/semester of a Bachelor’s degree until the present
  • Proposal for research with references (maximum of 8 pages; minimum of 2 pages)
  • 2-3 letters of recommendation from people who are knowledgeable about the applicant’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor for current PhD students)
  • The student’s PhD program advisor’s brief (1-page) resume (Africa only)

Students can apply directly to the program. The number of students that can apply from each university is not limited.

By September 2022, awardees will be revealed on the Google Research blog.
