The Dr Bill Jonas Memorial Indigenous Fund is currently taking applications for their Dr Bill Jonas Scholarship for students from appropriately qualified candidates.

All students are eligible for a partly subsidized scholarship.

This scholarship was made possible by donations to the Dr. Bill Jonas Memorial Indigenous Fund.

The fund was established through contributions from the Wollotuka Institute, as well as friends, family, and community members who wished to honor Dr. Bill Jonas’ incredible dedication to Wollotuka and the University of Newcastle.

Dr. Jonas, a proud Worimi man, is regarded as a pioneer in Indigenous rights.

Dr. Jonas’ impressive resume includes work as a researcher, activist, and administrator.

Dr. Jonas died on May 25, 2019, after being Australia’s first Aboriginal Ph.D. holder and the country’s second Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner.

Dr Bill Jonas Scholarship Requirements

To be considered for this scholarship, you must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in any year of a University of Newcastle undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
  • You must be enrolled full-time or part-time.
  • Demonstrate academic progress by obtaining the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) or equivalent for new students, or a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 4.0 for returning students.
  • As indicated above, establish your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity and background with the institution.
  • Demonstrate the impact of personal circumstances such as being a caregiver or a single parent, financial difficulties, English language problems, Indigenous Australians, long-term medical conditions or the impacts of abuse, disability, refugee status, and regional/remote disadvantage.
  • At the same time, you must not be the recipient of the another University of Newcastle donor-funded or sponsored scholarship.

Personal/Academic Documentation that is required

You will not be able to proceed with your application until you submit the documents.

  • Please have all needed papers ready to submit as PDF, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, or JPG files before beginning the online application process.
  • A personal essay (about one A4 page) explaining your academic accomplishments, professional goals in the appropriate field of study, and how this scholarship might help you.

It’s possible that you’ll be requested to provide proof of your educational deficit.

Dr Bill Jonas Scholarship Worth

The scholarship offers a total benefit of $5,000 over the course of a year, provided that eligibility requirements are satisfied during the award period.

Following the semester one and semester two census dates, the scholarship will be given in two lump installments of $2,500 each.

How you will be Selected

A competitive approach will be used to choose the scholarship recipients.

Which will involve a review of the scholarship application and any needed supporting evidence, as well as a comparison to the qualifying requirements.

The ultimate selection will be made by the Indigenous Scholarship Selection Committee.

Which will be made up of at least three persons selected by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Indigenous Strategy and Leadership.

The Selection Committee will notify the approved Scholarships Officer of the names of the beneficiaries, and all applicants will be informed through email.

This will happen within six weeks after the scholarship application deadline.
