For the academic year 2022/23, the Novo Nordisk Foundation is accepting applications for the Copenhagen Bioscience PhD Programme in Denmark.

Up to 16 ambitious foreign candidates are selected each year for the Copenhagen Bioscience PhD program to begin their careers in the lively scientific environment of the Novo Nordisk Foundation Research Centers in Copenhagen.

Each year, around sixteen students are chosen based on their academic accomplishments, research experience, academic references, and interviews.

The four-year program consists of a pre-doctoral year and three years of PhD study in one of the following fields:

NNF Center for

  • Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR)
  • Biosustainability (CFB)
  • Protein Research (CPR)
  • Stem Cell Medicine (reNEW)

Worth of Award

Each student will get financing from the NNF for up to four years. The grant covers the whole salary as well as tuition costs. All scholarships will be handled by the centers’ host universities.

  • The student is employed at their particular institution for the first year and gets a predoctoral fellowship to pay their wage.
  • Members of the program are not officially enrolled as PhD students until the second year of the program.
  • Students will be officially enrolled as PhD students at their host institution in years 2-4, and will receive a PhD fellowship to cover their salary and tuition expenses.
  • Students who do not pass their qualifying test at the conclusion of their pre-doctoral year will not be funded for years 2 through 4.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation organizes and pays for travel and lodging for applicants who are being interviewed.

Copenhagen Bioscience PhD Programme Requirements

The Copenhagen Bioscience PhD program is designed for foreign students who want to migrate to Denmark and begin their careers in research at one of the NNF research centers.

  • Before the deadline, applicants must complete an online application form.
  • Applicants must have a degree from a university outside of Denmark before they begin the program. The program is also accessible to candidates with Danish degrees who have completed at least one year of full-time research experience outside of Denmark (as validated by a reference/references).
  • Applicants must have a university degree that officially qualifies them to pursue a PhD program (i.e., they must be at an academic level equal to a Master’s degree) before they begin the program.
  • Applicants who have worked or studied at a NNF research center for less than a year are allowed to apply, but they should be aware that if they join the Copenhagen Bioscience PhD program, they will not be able to conduct a rotation project or PhD project with their prior supervisor.
  • A minimum of two academic references must be provided by the candidate. References should come from accomplished research scientists who have supervised the candidate in a lab environment, or from academic professors who are familiar with the applicant.
  • Proof of English competence, such as a valid TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Advanced English, or GRE certificate, is required if the candidate is not a native English speaker. Proof of English proficiency is not needed if the candidate has completed earlier courses in English at the university level.

How to Apply for Copenhagen Bioscience PhD Programme

The following requirements must be met by applicants:

  • Use the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s web-based application system to submit a completely completed application form before the deadline.
  • Please include at least two scholarly references.
  • Hold, or expect to receive, a university degree that technically qualifies the candidate to attend a PhD program (usually a Master’s degree) prior to enrolment.
  • Hold or expect to get a university degree from a country other than Denmark before enrolling.
  • Applicants with a Danish degree who can show at least 12 months of full-time research experience outside of Denmark, as validated by at least one academic reference, are also eligible for the program.
  • Provide evidence of your ability to communicate in English (for example, TOEFL, IELTS, GRE scores).
