Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science 2023
The Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science 2023 are now accepting nominations.
Individuals who have made significant scientific or engineering contributions that improve the safety, sustainability, and resilience of civil infrastructure in a world faced with climate change, natural disasters, increased use due to population growth, and infrastructure that has outlived its design life are encouraged to submit nominations for the Franklin Institute’s Award.
Fundamental contributions that have had a wide influence should be recognized in nominations. Nominations are welcomed in the following subtopics, but are not limited to:
Machine learning, big data analytics, statistical algorithms, and cloud computing are all examples of artificial intelligence.
Risk analysis for natural disasters, interdependent system management, and vulnerability, and real-time monitoring and control
Technological advancements in waste-to-potable-water and-energy conversion.
Transportation, water and sanitation, electricity, bridge, and building infrastructure design innovations, heuristics, techniques, and standards.
Theme for 2023: Civil Infrastructure that is Safe, Sustainable, and Resilient
Prize
The winner will get a 14-karat gold medal and a cash award of $250,000 USD.
Bower Award and Prize | Eligibility Criteria
- This is an international competition for scientists and engineers who have made major contributions to improving the safety, sustainability, and resilience of civil infrastructure.
- According to Henry Bower’s will, this honor and reward must be given to a certain person.
- Candidates must be alive, and the winner will be required to attend The Franklin Institute Awards Week activities in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, in April 2023.
- Nominations from any person or group, including self-nominations, will be welcomed.
- Nominations of historically underrepresented individuals in science and engineering are especially welcomed.
Nomination
Nominations must be written in English and contain the following information:
- Nominee’s name and contact information
- Nominator’s name and contact information
- Curriculum vitae of the nominee, as well as a bibliography of noteworthy and relevant publications
- Proposed citation of 50 words or less outlining the accomplishment(s) for which the nominee has been nominated
- No more than a five-page narrative statement detailing the nominee’s credentials for the prize.
- The nominator sought four private letters of support, which the writers delivered immediately to The Franklin Institute Awards Office.
Nominations should explicitly state the nominee’s work’s scientific or engineering effect—innovative, technical, and/or conceptual—as well as the social and/or economic impact. All nominations and letters of support should be submitted or emailed to the following address:
