Biozentrum Basel International PhD Fellowships: The Biozentrum PhD Fellowships Program at the University of Basel in Switzerland is accepting applications from ambitious young scientists for the academic year 2022/2023.

The Biozentrum urges outstanding, ambitious, and highly motivated young scientists from all over the globe to apply for the Biozentrum Basel International PhD Program’s distinguished and sought-after scholarships.

The “Biozentrum PhD Fellowships” are granted on a competitive basis to a maximum of 10 successful candidates every open call, in contrast to many other PhD student programs that strive for broad recruitment of numerous individuals.

They give distinguished and autonomous fellowships with a distinctive rotation-based research group selection. The Biozentrum conducts research and training on scales ranging from the atom to the organism in the fields of:

  • Computational & Systems Biology
  • Growth & Development
  • Infection Biology
  • Neurobiology
  • Structural Biology & Biophysics

Worth of Scholarship

  • As a fellow, you will have the unique chance to work with a variety of research groups before determining where you will pursue your PhD. You’ll also be provided a variety of incentives to help you advance your scientific career.
    You will get full financial assistance for your PhD thesis, which will take between 3 and 4 years to complete, including rotations.
  • You will also be offered a variety of incentives to aid your scientific and personal development. The following perks are now available (annual adjustments may apply):
  • a yearly stipend to attend meetings, buy books, or buy a computer
  • a yearly study trip to a Siemens-related city
  • scientific meetings and networking opportunities with present and former “Independent Fellowships” students and alumni
  • a personal certificate stating that you have been accepted into the fellowship program
  • Biozentrum faculty members in the Program Committee assisted with the compilation of the personal CV and postdoctoral application.
  • At the conclusion of the PhD thesis, financial assistance for travel to postdoctoral interviews is available.

Biozentrum Basel International PhD Fellowships | Eligibility Criteria

  • You must have a university degree that qualifies you for a PhD program at the University of Basel or intend to acquire one shortly (MSc, Diploma, etc.).
  • Outstanding students with a BSc degree (e.g., USA, Canada, Singapore) are also eligible to apply to the fellowship program in rare situations; nevertheless, following admission, they will be required to take extra courses at the Biozentrum.
  • You are no longer eligible to apply if you have already enrolled at the Biozentrum or plan to begin your PhD thesis before September 1 or March 1 of the same year as the open call.

How to Apply for Biozentrum Basel International PhD Fellowships

Summer calls begin on the 30th of January and winter calls begin on the 1st of September. Please submit your application on the internet.

The following items must be included in your application:

  • electronic copies of your diploma/MSc degree in pdf format, with grades and transcripts
  • A curriculum vitae (CV) or a scientific résumé (maximum one page, pdf format)
  • 2 referees from your prior academic environment (names and contact details) (usually faculty members) Referees will be contacted automatically and requested to complete an online evaluation as well as a letter of recommendation.
  • As soon as you submit your application, you will receive further information regarding the application process.

Selection procedure

  • Applications will be considered by all Biozentrum group leaders after the open call deadline has passed. The Program Committee will pick 20-30 candidates based on peer comments and invite them to the Biozentrum for an interview week (travel and accommodation provided by the fellowship program).
  • You will be asked to name 8 to 10 group leaders to help organize your individual interviews and lab visits throughout the interview week. You will also give a 10-minute presentation and a 10-minute question-and-answer session to the Program Committee and any interested group leaders about your study.
  • During these days, a chaperone – a PhD from the fellowships – will be your personal guide, telling you about being a PhD at the Biozentrum and answering your questions. Two meals with the group leaders and chaperones, as well as an informal meeting with the PhD Club and a cultural tour to Basel, will provide you with a thorough understanding of Basel and the Biozentrum.
  • You will be notified of who will be offered fellowships at the end of the interview week. They anticipate hearing back from you in September or March, depending on whether you accepted or declined the fellowship. After that, you can begin your PhD in six months.
