ABOUT NUC

The National Universities Commission (NUC) of Nigeria is a government agency that promotes quality higher education in Nigeria. It is in Abuja, the capital city.

The commission was set up in 1962 as an advisory group in the Cabinet Office.

It was made a legal body in 1974, and Professor Jibril Aminu was its first Executive Secretary.

It is currently a part of the Federal Ministry of Education and is a parastatal (government-owned corporation).

The commission has a Governing Council, which is led by Professor Shehu Galadanchi. Its Executive Secretary is Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, who started on August 3, 2016.

Since it was set up, the commission has grown from a small office in the Cabinet Office to an important part of the Nigerian government in charge of the development and management of university education.
