BBC Young Writers Award 2022 for Young People in the UK

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Young Writers Award 2022 is now accepting applications.

The BBC Young Writers’ Award, in collaboration with Cambridge University, is now in its ninth year, and it encourages all young people in the UK aged 14 to 18 to submit stories of up to 1,000 words.

Five writers will be shortlisted for the BBC Young Writers’ Award, which will be held at Cambridge University. An actor will narrate each of the five nominated stories, which will be filmed for an exclusive BBC broadcast. The stories are also included in an award-specific anthology.

Worth of  Scholarship

  • The five finalists will be invited to a creative writing session with a renowned author, as well as a visit to BBC Broadcasting House in central London, before the award presentation, which will be aired live from Radio 4’s flagship arts program, Front Row.
  • At the awards event, the five shortlisted writers will have the opportunity to meet famous authors, publishers, agents, and broadcasters. Each of the five nominated authors and an accompanying adult will receive travel, lodging, refreshments, and additional help as needed. Each shortlisted writer is allowed to bring three additional guests to the Award ceremony who must be at least 14 years old (at their own cost). A parent/guardian or BBC chaperone will be required for all authors.
  • The BBC Young Writers’ Award will be given to one winner from Cambridge University. In addition, the winning writer will enjoy a one-on-one mentorship session with a novelist.

BBC Young Writers Award 2022 | Eligibility Criteria

Residents of the United Kingdom, including the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands, are eligible.
Be between the ages of 14 and 18 at the time of application; proof of identification and eligibility may be required. If the writer is under the age of 16, he or she must submit the entry with the approval of an adult (parent, guardian, or teacher). Writers can only submit as individuals, not as part of a writing team, and the narrative must be under 1,000 words. There is no minimum word count, but the submission must be a story.

Evaluating Criteria

The following criteria are used to evaluate entries:

  • Quality of writing
  • Creativity, inventiveness, and originality
  • Language and sentence construction
  • The capacity of a writer to convey a tale, attract the reader’s attention and keep it.

How to Apply

Write and style your short tale according to the guidelines below.

  • One entry per writer
  • Written in English (with a Gaelic/Welsh version if appropriate – see Entry Terms and Conditions, clause 9)
  • A maximum of 1,000 words
