APN Collaborative Working Group Research Fellowship

Senior African academics and researchers based at universities, training, and policy institutions in Africa are invited to apply to the African Peacebuilding Network (APN) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) to assemble and lead collaborative research projects intended to inform policy and practice on conflict and peacebuilding on the continent.

The APN’s Collaborative Working Group Research Fellowship is a new project that complements the APN’s field-based and networking activities.

The need for meaningful cooperation and involvement of scholars and practitioners on Africa’s peacebuilding difficulties is addressed through this fellowship.

It also aims to link research to policy, encourage mentorship of novice scholars by older colleagues, enhance networking between academics and practitioners, and raise the chance of policy affecting via the knowledge-production process.

Fellowship Details

The African Peacebuilding Network will assist the working group in conducting novel policy-relevant research on the design, implementation, and effectiveness of peacebuilding mechanisms and processes in conflict-affected African nations and sub-regions. Research, convening of scholar-practitioner meetings, and study of topics such as the following are all supported:

  • Cultures, methods, and practices of local peacebuilding;
  • Inequality, poverty, and natural resource conflict are all issues that need to be addressed.
  • Cooperation on peace and security concerns between the UN, the African Union, and the African Regional Economic Communities (RECs);
  • African Governance Architecture (AGA) and African Peace and Security Architecture (APSA) are two types of African architecture.
  • Women, peace, and security are three words that come to mind while thinking about women.
  • Transnationalization, migration, young radicalization, extremism, and violence are all issues that need to be addressed.
  • Climate change, peace, and security are all issues that need to be addressed.
  • System of Early Warning and Response; and
  • Creating linkages between practice and research in mediation.

Fellowship

  • A maximum payment of $60,000 will be given to one APN Collaborative Working Group Research Fellowship for an eighteen-month term.

APN Collaborative Working Group Research Fellowship Requirements

  • Applicants must be African-based academics or practitioners, with the primary investigator located at or linked with an African institution.
  • The competition is available to six-member combined researcher-practitioner teams made up of Africans working at or linked with universities, regional organizations, government agencies, or nonprofit, media, or civil society groups on the continent.
  • While the primary investigator must have a PhD, other members of the research team should have at least a master’s degree and two or more years of experience.

Application for APN Collaborative Working Group Research Fellowship

On behalf of the collaborative working group, the university-based main investigator, who must also be a senior academic or senior practitioner with solid research experience in African peace and security studies, should submit an application.

  • Proposed Research Budget
  • List of All Team Members, including their names, affiliations, professional backgrounds, and highest degree levels attained

  • Language evaluation(s) (if required)
