AI Computer Vision Sussex PhD Studentship in Optics or in UK 2022

In the academic semester of 2022/23, the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom is accepting applications for an AI Computer Vision Sussex PhD Studentship.

AI Computer Vision Sussex PhD Studentship

A PhD studentship in the Industrial Informatics and Signal Processing area is available at the School of Engineering and Informatics (IISP).

The IISP group conducts active research in the fields of optics and computer vision and is searching for a research student to work on one of the following topics.

Deep learning systems based on optics.

Deep learning has benefited science and industry tremendously in recent years.

However, the amount of electrical power required to execute the system on a large scale is enormous.

One option is to use optical processing for a portion of the processing.

Convolutions may be computed at the speed of light utilizing milliWatts of energy using spatial light modulators and the Fourier transforming characteristics of lenses.

Because optical systems have more noise than electrical systems, certain ingenious solutions are required to counteract this.

This project will look at the designs, model the system, and perhaps implement it.

The student will use PyTorch to model and train the network.

LiFi-based optical communications.

A laser may be used to broadcast information to any place inside a room using holographic beam control.

This replaces the crowded wifi spectrum with high-speed, encrypted point-to-point connections.

The project will focus on the development of non-diffracting beams that may be utilized to extend the transmission range.

Cancer Diagnostics in Medicine.

Computers may learn to recognize the tell-tale indications of cancer in many medical imaging modalities, such as MRI, using deep learning.

This initiative will leverage medical information to create new AI architects for detecting lung and breast malignancies.

The goal is to find potential tumors as soon as possible since early management will considerably improve cancer’s survival.

Because the project will employ CUDA accelerated deep learning in Python, the candidate should have computational and/or AI experience.

People and things must be tracked across several cameras, which is a tough task.

Furthermore, the item is often seen by just a few pixels.

Deep learning networks struggle with this low resolution.

This project will attempt to address these issues.

There are several uses, ranging from monitoring individuals in public places like airports and train stations to determine the difference between a drone and a bird, as well as identifying birds, bats, and animals for conservation purposes.
