African Union Commission Chairperson’s Youth Envoy (AUCYE)- Become 2nd AU Youth Envoy (US$ 96,921.34 annual lump-sum salary)

Job Objectives

The African Union Commission Chairperson’s Youth Envoy will work closely with the Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate under the direction of the AUC Chairperson, via the Cabinet (WGYD).

The Youth Envoy will collaborate closely with the Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate (WGYD) to achieve its goals.

  • Advocate for AU’s youth policy.
  • Promote youth participation via policies and partnerships; and

Main Purposes

  • Advocate for the creation and implementation of AU frameworks, policies, initiatives, and programs for youth development and participation.
  • Champion and promote youth development and engagement best practices.
  • Consult and mobilize youth networks in order to discuss and participate in the creation and implementation of the African Union Youth Frameworks.
  • Collaborate closely with the Women, Gender, and Youth Directorate to ensure that the content and goals for youth development and engagement are aligned with those of the Youth Envoy’s office. 
  • Represent African youth voices in AU policy processes.

Responsibilities that are specific to the position.

The African Union Chairperson’s Youth Envoy will be in charge of, among other things, championing the AU’s youth policies and objectives, as defined in the African Youth Charter and the Africa Plan of Action on Youth Empowerment (APAYE), both of which are guided by Agenda 2063.

  • Collaborate with important stakeholders, such as governments, academic institutions, the media and civil society, financial institutions, and commercial and non-governmental organizations.
  • Encourage multi-stakeholder collaboration in the implementation of the African Youth Charter, APAYE, and other AU youth initiatives.
  • Foster regional, continental, and global partnerships to encourage young participation in AUC policy discussions and decision-making processes.
  • Encourage African young people, particularly those from disadvantaged groups, to participate in regions impacted by war and humanitarian crises in a systematic and meaningful way.
  • Incorporate and encourage young people’s participation in various creative and non-traditional channels, such as the usage of social media.
  • Assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of special youth events such as Africa Youth Day, International Youth Day, and Intergenerational Dialogues, mobilizing youth voices in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of these events, platforms, and frameworks; and raise regional, continental, and global awareness and attention to youth issues.
  • Encourage young leadership at the national and continental levels, particularly via lobbying for more youth involvement in AUC activities, with a particular emphasis on the most marginalized and vulnerable youth.
  • Speak up in favor of more funding and resources for youth development and policy.
  • Collaborate with appropriate AUC Departments to advocate for and increase the role of youth in the AUC’s activities, particularly the parity goal of attaining 35 percent quotas for young people.
  • Collaborate with the appropriate AU Department to mobilize resources for programs linked to her work, in accordance with AU finance laws and regulations.
  • In cooperation with WGDY, prepare a periodic work plan that has been evaluated and authorized by the CCP.
  • Collaborate closely with the Chairperson’s Cabinet on any issues relating to the area of participation, as allocated by the appropriate authorities.

Requirements for Academics and Relevant Work Experience

  • Candidates must possess a Master’s degree in Development Studies or a similar area, as well as a minimum of three years of progressive professional experience in public policy, public engagement, youth development, project management, or related fields.
  • Work experience in the field of youth development
  • Fluency in one of the AU working languages is a plus; fluency in another AU language is a plus.

Or

  • Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies or a similar area, with at least 5 years of progressive professional experience in public policy, public engagement, youth development, project management, or other relevant fields.

APPOINTMENT PERIOD:

The appointment will be for a one-year fixed-term contract, with the first three (3) months serving as a probationary period.

Following that, the contract may be renewed for a similar period if funding is available, performance is satisfactory, and deliverables are met.

The pay linked to the job is an annual lump-sum of US$ 96,921.34 (P3 Step 5) inclusive of all allowances for internationally recruited employees, and US$ 78,461.08 inclusive of all allowances for locally recruited workers of the African Union Commission
