Academy for Women Entrepreneurs Cohort 3 in Uganda 2022

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Embassy in Uganda is accepting applications for the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs Cohort 3 in 2022.

Academy for Women Entrepreneurs

In support of the White House-led Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative (W-GDP), the Academy will provide women with the practical skills they need to start and run successful companies.

AWE is dedicated to equipping women with the information, skills, and networks they need to make their business ideas into reality.

Women across Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, Papua New Guinea, and Spain will improve their entrepreneurial skills, network with mentors, and see their ideas come to life via assisted online learning. 

AWE aims to enhance collective economic prosperity and global stability by fostering the growth of women with bright ideas into successful entrepreneurs via a comprehensive, inclusive learning community.

Worth of Award

Cohort 3 of the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs equips women with business training.

  • The Dreambuilder program facilitates the acquisition of new business knowledge and abilities.
  • learn from a hand-picked roster of speakers and SHONA Experts, as well as their peers (other entrepreneurs).
  • comprehend the foundations of starting and growing a company
  • get exposure to company growth methods in the United States

It also provides capital, i.e.

  • access to funding from the United States African Development Foundation (USADF)
  • access to funding from the SHONA Loan Facility, investing 12-month uncollateralized loans of between USD 1,000 (Ugx. 3.5 million) – USD 10,000 (Ugx. 35 million)

Yet again, the Cohort provides networks for women to

  • join the US Embassy Network including alumni of US government exchange programs, other AWE alumni, local American business experts, business experts from the Ugandan branches of American companies, and others.
  • have access to markets.
  • have access to additional Business Development Support services, including SHONA’s programs.

Academy for Women Entrepreneurs Requirements

Target Women Entrepreneurs include those

  • Based in the districts of Kampala, Kabarole, Mbale, Lira, and the neighboring areas
  • between the ages of 25 and 40
  • with 1–5 years of experience in the business
  • who own or manage a for-profit company that is lawfully registered with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and/or local governments.
  • who has the ability to establish and grow their company with 
  • English-speaking assistance?
  • who are computer educated and have consistent access to a computer or smartphone linked to the internet

Target businesses include

  • Kampala district: Operating in the Creative Sector including but not limited to: Advertising & Marketing; Architecture; Art & Crafts; Design: Product, Graphic & Fashion Design; Film, TV productions, TV, Video, Radio & Photography; Publishing; Music, Performing & Visual Arts; Galleries; IT, Software & Computer Services, for Kampala district.
  • Kabarole, Mbale & Lira districts: Operating in the technology sector or whose businesses utilize technology for a significant aspect of their work, including digital sales, marketing, payments, or in their operations.
